Roman Fort Ruins. The hardknott pass leading to the location is at times a hard drive. Not to be taken lightly...
Especially if the weather is icy or even heavy rain , the roads are difficult enough.
The Fort however is good. It was very boggy on the day and windy. Its an exposed location so dress accordingly to the weather conditions.
Keep you're dogs on the lead at all times. There's usually sheep roaming around. We saw a dog chasing the sheep. Not good !
Enjoy the Fort 👍
What a fantastic thing to go visit, if you're interested in history and learning new things this is definitely a must, we only stopped to have a walk nearby and to come across this was fantastic ended up staying for a good half an hour and could have easily stayed long if the weather was better.
It's well worth a visit if you haven't already, just remember to get to it you have to ascend a portion of one of the hardest roads in England so make sure your car is up to it.
Great if you feel up to the drive away up in the hills. But totally worth it. I saw loads of people parked further down the hill, but there is actually parking at the site.
It was howling with wind and rain when we went but still worth it. Plenty of plaques that explain what bit you are standing in and some history on it.
You can also walk further around the area if you want to take in the valley. Honestly beautiful.
Well worth the visit. Some of the fort walls are 10ft high in places. It's the most intact roman fort I've seen in the UK. The vews up to Scarfell and Scarfell pike are epic.
Excellent walk up to the Fort. We visited in January and it was very icy. The views are spectacular and the fort itself is absolutely stunning and pretty well preserved. There are signs explaining the barracks and what each building was used for.
You can park at the bottom of the hill and walk up. I'm sure you can also drive up to the top by heading over some cattle grids.
The fort is situated on the west side of Hardknott pass and can be easily missed if you are not looking out for it. This is a fantastic example of a Roman fort. Do not make the mistake of only looking at the bath house which is situated outside the main fort, carry on up the hill to the main entrance to the fort where you will find information plaques explaining each area of the fort. Well worth a visit if Roman history interests you.
I was mightily impressed by the condition of the fort remnants and the care that it is being given. Fantastic!
We parked at the base of the hill and walked up the track, which is pretty steep, and soon enough came to the fort wall. This must have been very impressive in its heyday and was built to last!
The views are magnificent from this point, over to Scafell and down the valley to Ravenglass and the sea.
Well worth a visit, with the view up to and from Hardknot Pass also worth the further drive.
I came across this while walking the wainwrights, I knew it existed prior, but wanted to capture some drone shots of it.
The fo dates back around 1900 years, it is free, there is limited parking along the roadside, but bear in mind this is not a road designed to handle many cars so parking is first come first served.
incredible they can build things that can last thousands of years, and yet todays substandard work we are lucky to get 10-20 years from.
